STEM Navigators

Pathways to Achievement In Science, Technology, Engineering, & Math

Who We Are

Welcome, all STEM Navigators!

This website was created to support the dreams of many STEM Navigators where ever they are.

Our team of authors wanted to collaborate on a book that told our story as we journeyed (and are still journeying) through our Pathway to Achievement in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. As young STEM students we definitely didn’t know where our pathway would lead us and we didn’t always know that the twists and turns back then would form us into the community changers we are today. BUT we did know that it was all possible together.

Over the years, we have graduated, worked, started businesses, and built families, but one thing that remained consistent was our love of STEM. This love of STEM has fueled us to make a difference in not only our lives, but in our community, as well.

So join our journey as you continue your journey to becoming a STEM Navigator and write your own Pathway to Achievement in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.

This book is a compilation of real-life STEM success stories from people who have not only been wildly successful in pursuing and obtaining their own Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics degrees, but they have all worked to teach, mentor, and research ways to guide others effectively through obtaining a STEM education.

Dr. Jasmine Davenport Crenshaw is a native of Durham, NC. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Physics from North Carolina A&T State University, a Master of Science in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of Florida, and a Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of Florida. Her graduate research specialty area is in Biomaterials, where she focused her research on examining the self-assembly of kinesin biomolecular motor proteins during active transport using computational methods.

Dr. Lauren D. Thomas is a Research Scientist at the University of Washington, Center for Engineering Learning and Teaching. In her role, she coordinates the participation of six Washington colleges in the Consortium to Promote Reflection in Engineering Education, CPREE. She also acts as a research and evaluation consultant for STEM education programs and initiatives around the country.

Dr. Charmane V. Caldwell is the Director of Diversity and Inclusion at the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering (COE). She is responsible for ensuring that the demographics of students, faculty and staff uphold the college’s mission “to attract and graduate a greater number of minorities and women in professional engineering.” As Director, Charmane leads a comprehensive effort to develop and implement diversity and inclusion strategies and programs, with emphasis on four primary areas: outreach/recruitment of prospective undergraduate and graduate students; improving the climate and culture within the college to welcome all its constituents; assist with the transition of new faculty into the College of Engineering and providing recommendations to senior administration within the FAMU-FSU COE regarding diversity issues to establish college policies and procedures. Additionally, Dr. Caldwell serves as a teaching professor for the First-Year Engineering Lab (FYEL), which is part of the pre-engineering program.
